Diamond Grading
The 4C’s
GIA’s 4Cs Guide teaches you how GIA grades color, cut, clarity, and carat weight — so you know exactly what you’re paying for.
Cut
One of the most important factors in how a diamond is priced, with a significant effect on the overall brilliance and fire of the diamond. Grades range between excellent, very good, good, fair, and poor.
Color
GIA's D-to-Z color-grading system measures the degree of colorlessness. Many distinctions are so subtle they are invisible to the untrained eye — but they make a big difference in quality and price.
Clarity
From Flawless to Included, clarity marks a diamond's natural birthmarks. Stones graded above VS2 by GIA are often considered eye clean — no inclusions visible without a jeweler's loupe.
Carat
A metric carat is 200 milligrams, subdivided into 100 points. Weights below one carat are described by points alone; greater weights in carats and decimals.
